The generous portions of fish, especially the cod, consistently wow diners. Customers often mention the fish is twice the size of an adult hand, making it a fantastic value for money. Quick service is another highlight—many meals cook in under five minutes, perfect for those on the go. The curry sauce is a standout, receiving high praise for adding a delicious twist to the classic chips. The friendly staff shine in reviews; their willingness to accommodate last-minute requests ensures a pleasant experience. Plus, the casual atmosphere appeals to families and travelers alike, making it a relaxed spot for a meal.

Most Disliked

Some customers note that the menu can be limited near closing time, leading to disappointment if specific items are no longer available. A few reviews mention that the location can get busy, which might lead to longer wait times during peak hours, although the majority still find the service to be quick. Others have experienced difficulties in finding seating during peak dining hours, especially for bigger groups. Given its popularity, the restaurant's opening times can fluctuate, creating uncertainty for those planning a visit. Lastly, the environment might feel too casual for diners looking for a more formal dining experience.

The perfect, freshly made, super chrispy, affordable (£8), and juicy cod that's about twice of an adult hand. Must visit again. Add: I visited about an hour later and order the Haddock version. It is even bigger that the paper container couldn't fit. Shame I forgot to take a photo.

Great tasting food and very reasonable prices. Fish and chips is fantastic and the wait was less than 5mins for our to be cooked freshly. Great location near the train station so perfect if your train is delayed and also perfect for a walk on the walls before or afterwards.

Best fish and chips we had in England! Best value too! The curry sauce on the chips was an added bonus. We highly recommend that you visit this place if you are in York!

We turned up 30 mins before closing and as such there wasn’t a full menu available but the very polite and patient gentleman behind the counter sorted us all out with chips/whatever meat options were available/buttered baps/curry sauce / gravy, even though we were drunk and annoying. Curry sauce and gravy were great, chips were good, and we all enjoyed the some scraps on top as well. I’ll be back to try the fish and chips… albeit at an earlier hour. Big shout out to the server who dealt really well with our inebriated nonsense.

As a regular visitor to York from my hometown in Scotland I enjoy the local restaurants as well as all the other benefits of visiting this beautiful city. One of my favourites is in micklegate where I go for traditional fish and chips which are served in a large box and taste delicious. The staff are friendly and welcoming and if you find the restaurant too far away from your location they deliver as well. I highly recommend you try the food here.
